the director’s cut

a documentary essay by JERRY HYDE & MAI HUA

What happens when men challenge the patriarchal model of masculinity…

and choose vulnerability instead.

Powerful and poetic. Make Me a Man with its both intimate and universal narration, is a precious gem in our search for new masculinities. ”

Puissant et poétique. Make Me a Man, avec sa narration à la fois intime et universelle, apporte une pierre précieuse à la réflexion sur les nouvelles masculinités.

LE MONDE

“What an incredible film. The men themselves were such treasures in all their wounded, strong, beautiful ways. The entire thing just left me giddy and stunned.”

Synopsis

For one hour only you are invited to join a men’s group.

Over 3 years in the making under the working title Meetings With Remarkable Men, the brand new, extensively re-edited documentary MAKE ME A MAN penetrates deep into the intimate therapeutic journeys of a rare breed of men dedicated to inner growth, self-enquiry and mutual support.

Witness profoundly personal talking head interviews and join Hyde and some of the group members on a powerfully emotive pilgrimage to the First World War battlefields of the Somme where silence is often louder than words. Funny, tragic, poignant and above all deeply honest, each and every one of the participants is unguarded, raw and open in a way you may never have seen before.

With men chosen at random from Hyde’s 25 year group practice, the film explores universal themes such as sex, abuse, relationships and what it means to be a (hu)man in 21st century culture as the members strive to be the best versions of themselves, despite the prevailing sexist view of masculinity that still maintains men should be strong, silent and hide their vulnerability.

Synopsis

“Far from clichés and expectations. These men tell their wounds and prove only education and culture separate them from women.”

“When expressing their emotions make men grow.”

“The work you've all done together shows in every frame, but the film is not about the mines, it's about the jewels they found. It is a spiritual film. I felt its holiness.”

BEFORE ACTION

By all the glories of the day,
And the cool evening's benison,
By that last sunset touch that lay,
Upon the hills when day was done,
By beauty lavishly outpoured,
And blessings carelessly received,
By all the days that I have lived,
Make me a soldier, Lord.

By all of man's hopes and fears,
And all the wonders poets sing,
The laughter of unclouded years,
And every sad and lovely thing;
By the romantic ages stored
With high endeavour that was his,
By all his mad catastrophes
Make me a man, O Lord.

I, that on my unfamiliar hill
Saw with uncomprehending eyes
A hundred of thy sunsets spill
Their fresh and sanguine sacrifice,
Ere the sun swings his noonday sword
Must say good-bye to all of this;-
By all delights that I shall miss,
Help me to die, O Lord.
